History

The bridge lies on the course of the old Ushu Kaido highway, carrying travelers who passed along that route in earlier times. Its alternate name, Shimo-no-Hashi, preserves that older designation today. Chosen as one of the 100 Fine Bridges of Japan, it is valued as more than a means of crossing, standing as a symbol of the history and scenery of the land.

Access

The bridge crosses the Yokote River in Yokote, Akita Prefecture, where Akita Prefectural Route 272 (Goshono-Yasuda Line) meets the water, at roughly 39.32 degrees north and 140.57 degrees east, close to central Yokote. It is easy to reach on foot or by car; for detailed directions, please check the official information.

Best season

Yokote is known for its kamakura snow huts and fireworks, and the area around the bridge takes part in these events. Winter wrapped in the glow of snow light and summer with fireworks mirrored on the river each offer a different face. Spring and autumn are pleasant for strolling as well, making the bridge worth a visit year round.
