
Overview
The Port of Akita is a seaport on the Sea of Japan coast, located to the west of the city center of Akita in Akita Prefecture. Formerly known as the Port of Tsuchizaki, it is designated by the Japanese government as a Major Port.

History
The port sits at the mouth of the former Omono River (Akita Canal) in the Tsuchizaki area, long known as a port of call for kitamaebune trading ships and a key transportation hub. It was known as the Port of Tsuchizaki until 1941. Oil refineries processing crude extracted from the Yabase oil field once lined the area around the port. The port has a total land area of 662.5 hectares (1,637 acres).

The port lies on the Sea of Japan coast, west of central Akita city, in the Tohoku region of northern Honshu.

As a working port area, its facilities can be viewed year-round.
