History

The building was completed in 1912, during the Meiji era, as the head office of the former Akita Bank. Its red-brick exterior in the Renaissance architectural style was designed by architect Naoyuki Yamaguchi. In recognition of its historical value, it has been designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan. On July 31, 1985, the Akarenga-kan, together with a new wing and storage facility, opened as a municipal local history and art museum.
