History
Hottai Falls lies on the Akasawa River, a tributary at the upper reaches of the Koyoshi River. The falls and the potholes found around it were designated Akita Prefecture's first Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument on December 17, 1960. The waterfall was also included among "Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls," a list published by the Japanese Environment Agency in 1990.
