Overview
Senshū Park is an urban park in the center of Akita City, laid out on the site of the former Kubota Castle. Opened as a park in 1896, it preserves the atmosphere of the castle that once served as the seat of the Satake clan, the rulers of the old Akita domain. Chosen for Japan's Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots, the 100 Best Urban Parks, and the 100 Best Historical Parks, it is a green refuge where history and nature meet.

History
The park stands where Kubota Castle, the residence of the Satake clan, once rose. It was opened as a public park in 1896. Although the castle buildings are gone, the moats, earthen ramparts, and gate remains still shape the grounds, and the site is designated a Place of Scenic Beauty by Akita City as Senshū Park (Kubota Castle Ruins). The Satake Historical Museum and Iyataka Shrine within the park let visitors trace Akita's domain era.
Access
The park sits in the heart of Akita City, near 39.72 degrees north and 140.12 degrees east. It lies within walking distance west of JR Akita Station, and most visitors reach the castle hill on foot from the station. Please check official sources for detailed routes and parking availability.
Best season
Spring is the most spectacular season, when the cherry trees bloom and reveal why the park earned a place among Japan's Top 100 Cherry Blossom Spots. In autumn, colored leaves line the moats and blend with the quiet dignity of the castle ruins. Each season has its charm, but the blossom and foliage periods draw the biggest crowds.

Did you know?
💡 The grounds gather several cultural institutions, including the Akita Prefectural Hall, the Meitokukan Central Library, and the Satake Historical Museum. That a library and museums share space with a castle-ruin park shows how deeply it is woven into the daily life of the city's residents.
