Overview

Omori Park is a spacious municipal park in Omori, Yokote City, Akita Prefecture. It combines a green area near the site of a former castle with a cluster of sports and recreation facilities, making it a beloved gathering spot for local residents. The park is especially famous for the moss phlox that carpets its hills in May, offering an easy way to enjoy the changing seasons of Yokote's rural landscape.

Highlights

  • Sweeping moss phlox at the May Shibazakura Festa
  • Sports facilities with tennis courts, a gym, and a baseball stadium
  • Hot-spring lodging that also offers day-use bathing
  • Views of rural Yokote from the high castle grounds

History

The park traces its origins to 1901 and has grown alongside the community for more than a century. The high ground where a castle once stood was developed into parkland, and over time sports facilities such as tennis courts, a gymnasium, and a baseball stadium were added, shaping today's integrated park and resort area. The castle-side grounds are sometimes called Omori Park, while the recreation zone is known as the Omori Resort Village.

Access

The park lies in Omori, Yokote City, Akita Prefecture (around 39.35°N, 140.43°E). Reaching it by car from central Yokote is convenient, and on-site parking is available. Visitors relying on public transport can use bus routes or taxis from stations such as Yokote. Please check official sources for detailed routes and current services.

Best season

The highlight is the Shibazakura (Moss Phlox) Festa held in May, when the hillsides turn into a carpet of pink and white. The fresh greenery of early summer and the autumn foliage also make for pleasant strolls, while the sports facilities can be used year-round. Since bloom timing shifts with the weather, it is wise to check flowering conditions before visiting.
