Overview

The Susenoja Cave is an archaeological site containing the remains of a cave dwelling inhabited in the early Jōmon period, located in the Susecho neighborhood of the city of Toyohashi, Aichi. It is a limestone cave about 50 meters deep, believed to have been a cave dwelling site of the early Jōmon period. It was designated a National Historic Site of Japan in 1957.

History

The Susenoja Cave is a cave dating to the Jōmon period, located near the ascent from Mount Suse toward Honzaka Pass. It is a limestone cave about 50 meters deep, thought to have been a dwelling site of the early Jōmon period (roughly 10,000 BC to 4000 BC). It was designated a National Historic Site of Japan on July 1, 1957.

Access

The site lies in the Susecho neighborhood of the city of Toyohashi, Aichi, near the ascent from Mount Suse toward Honzaka Pass. Visitors should check local transport and road conditions in advance.

Best season

The interior of the cave is little affected by weather, while the natural setting around the ascent changes with the seasons.
