History

Ryōun-ji belongs to the Myōshin-ji branch of the Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism and bears the mountain name Shūkeizan. The Myōshin-ji branch takes the great temple of Myōshin-ji in Kyoto as its head temple and has many affiliated temples across Japan. As one of these, Ryōun-ji has kept its dharma lamp burning here in Inabaji, Nakamura-ku. For details of its founding and history, it is best to check the notices within the grounds or official information when you visit.

Access

The temple stands in Inabaji-hondori, Nakamura-ku, Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, on the western side of Nagoya Station. It can be reached by subway and bus, and its central location also makes it suitable to reach on foot. Please confirm the exact route from the nearest station and the availability of parking through official information in advance.

Best season

As an urban Zen temple, it can be visited quietly throughout the year. The mild days of spring and autumn make time in the grounds especially pleasant and pair well with a stroll through the surrounding streets. If you come in summer or winter, dress for the heat or cold accordingly.
