Overview

Atsuta Jingu Park is a prefectural urban park (a district park) in Hataya-cho, Atsuta Ward, Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture. Roughly one-third of its area is occupied by Danpusan Kofun, a nationally designated historic burial mound, and the park takes the name Atsuta Jingu because this land was once managed by Atsuta Shrine. Within the grounds are sports facilities including tennis courts, ball-game fields, a baseball ground, and gateball courts, and the park is linked by a footbridge to Shirotori Garden across the Hori River. It is a green retreat within the city of Nagoya where historic-site strolling and sport can be enjoyed together.

Highlights

  • Danpusan Kofun, a national historic site covering about one-third of the park
  • Sports facilities including tennis courts, ball fields, a baseball ground, and gateball courts
  • Shirotori Garden, linked by a footbridge across the Hori River
  • A prefectural urban park opened on land tied to Atsuta Shrine

History

Atsuta Jingu Park is a prefectural urban park developed on land that was originally managed by Atsuta Shrine. Danpusan Kofun, the symbol of the park, is a burial mound tied to the heritage of Atsuta Shrine and occupies a broad section of the grounds. The park was named Atsuta Jingu Park because of this connection, even though it actually stands a little away from the shrine, along National Route 19. It is a park rich in background, where the history of a sacred site overlaps with its present-day role as a prefectural park.

Access

The park lies in Hataya-cho, Atsuta Ward, Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture (near Hataya 1-chome, around 35.13 degrees north, 136.90 degrees east), along National Route 19. Access from central Nagoya is good, and visitors can reach it on foot or by local bus from nearby subway or Meitetsu stations. Because it is linked by a footbridge to Shirotori Garden on the opposite bank of the Hori River, the two can be explored together on foot. Please check official sources for current routes and parking.

Best season

As a park spread with outdoor sports facilities and a historic site, it is especially pleasant to stroll in the comfortable seasons of spring and autumn. The greenery is beautiful in the fresh leaves of spring and the autumn colors, ideal for a slow walk around Danpusan Kofun. For sport, the mild seasons are most comfortable, and combining a visit with the seasonal scenery of the adjacent Shirotori Garden makes for a full day.

Did you know?

💡 Although named after Atsuta Shrine, the park itself sits a little away from the shrine, along National Route 19. Danpusan Kofun, which fills a wide part of the grounds, accounts for roughly one-third of the park's total area. The appeal unique to this park is that, while it is a park with sports facilities, an ancient historic site can be experienced up close. Crossing the footbridge over the Hori River, you can continue straight on to the Japanese garden of Shirotori.
