Overview

The Sugimoto Art Museum was a museum in Mihama, Chita District, Aichi Prefecture, dedicated to the painter Kenkichi Sugimoto (1905–2004). It was operated by the Meitetsu railway company, while the artworks were owned by the Sugimoto Art Museum public interest foundation. Opened in April 1987, it was cherished as a place to engage closely with Sugimoto's painting in the seaside town of Mihama on the Chita Peninsula. It closed on October 31, 2021; afterward, a free transfer of the facility and works to the town of Mihama was proposed, and the town is said to be considering taking this on and operating the museum.

Highlights

  • A personal museum presenting the work of painter Kenkichi Sugimoto (1905–2004)
  • A distinctive setup operated by Meitetsu with works owned by a foundation
  • A seaside location in Mihama on the Chita Peninsula
  • The story of its proposed transfer to Mihama for future use after closing in 2021

History

The museum opened in April 1987 as a personal museum for the painter Kenkichi Sugimoto. Born in 1905 and passing away in 2004, Sugimoto was an artist whose body of work the museum was established to present in a single place. It was run by the Meitetsu railway company while the works were owned by the Sugimoto Art Museum foundation—an arrangement that was also part of a railway company's efforts to support culture along its lines. It closed, to much regret, on October 31, 2021; a proposal to transfer the facility and works to Mihama free of charge followed, and reports indicate the town is considering taking this on and weighing future operation.

Access

The museum was located in Mihama, Chita District, Aichi Prefecture (roughly 34.80°N, 136.87°E), on the western side of the Chita Peninsula. It lay within the area served by the Meitetsu Chita New Line and could be reached using Meitetsu trains from the direction of Nagoya. As the museum is now closed and the future use of the facility is under consideration, please always confirm the latest situation—whether visits are possible or reopening is planned—through official information from the town of Mihama or the relevant bodies.

Best season

Mihama on the Chita Peninsula is most comfortable in the sea-friendly summer and in the mild seasons of spring and autumn. When the museum was open, its location suited a visit combined with a coastal drive or sightseeing around the Chita Peninsula. As it is currently closed, when planning a trip it is more important than the season to confirm the facility's public status through official information first.

Did you know?

💡 The museum had a distinctive arrangement in which the Meitetsu railway company handled operations while the artworks were owned by the Sugimoto Art Museum public interest foundation. After its closure, a proposal arose to transfer the facility and works to the town of Mihama free of charge, and the local town's consideration of inheriting them as a regional cultural asset is another episode that speaks to this museum's journey.
